Chairman of the Burrell Aviation Group
John Schmatz is the Chairman of the Burrell Aviation Group. He started his career as a Certified Public Accountant in Miami, soon taking his skills to New York City, where he worked with real estate developers and syndicators at several national accounting firms. Mr. Schmatz returned to South Florida and became one of the founding members of the Sheltair Aviation Group, serving initially as CFO and rising to the position of President. He was instrumental in growing the company from a single FBO in Fort Lauderdale to over 20 airport properties across the east coast, providing FBO management, property leasing and the development of fuel farms, ramps and hangars. This expansion also included the successful negotiation of long-term land leases, the acquisition, development, financing and operation of aviation properties, as well as commercial and residential development and investments in third-party real estate transactions. He is a skilled negotiator, successfully establishing working relationships with local government entities of all types and sizes, including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, successfully moving Sheltair into several New York airports, including Laguardia and JFK.
